These cellulose grow mats are cut to 115 Ã 75mm and supplied 2400 per pack, making them the practical choice for anyone growing microgreens at volume. Home growers, catering operations, and vertical farm start-ups all benefit from a consistent, soil-free substrate that performs the same way every single time.
Cellulose mats work by absorbing and retaining moisture in a tight, even matrix. Seeds sit on the surface or nestle slightly into the fibres, receiving consistent hydration from below as you water. This bottom-up moisture delivery reduces damping-off risk compared with loose growing media, which can hold uneven wet spots.
At 115 Ã 75mm, each mat fits the most common microgreen punnet sizes used in the UK market. You do not need to trim or fold. Lay the mat flat, pre-soak it briefly, scatter your seed, and cover. The cellulose holds its shape when wet, so seeds stay distributed rather than clustering.
A pack of 2400 mats covers a large number of growing cycles. At one mat per punnet per cycle, a small-scale producer running 20 trays weekly will work through roughly 1000 mats in a year. This pack therefore suits growers who want to buy less frequently and keep costs down per unit. We offer graduated pricing on multi-box orders - get in touch for a quote.
These mats pair well with standard propagation trays and our range of grow cabinets where consistent humidity can be maintained. Under Sanlight LED panels, microgreens on cellulose mats respond well to lower DLI values in the first few days post-germination, then benefit from increased intensity as cotyledons expand. Keep the mat moist but not waterlogged throughout.
Growerâs Note: Pre-soak cellulose mats in clean, pH-adjusted water (around 6.0-6.5) for 30 to 60 seconds before seeding. Shake off excess water so the mat is damp throughout but not dripping. Over-saturation restricts oxygen to developing roots and slows germination. For mucilaginous seeds such as basil or chia, reduce pre-soak time or use a light misting instead.
