Bulk Grow Media and Punnets for Microgreens Producers

Microgreens are young seedlings of vegetables and herbs, cut just after the cotyledon or first true-leaf stage. They pack concentrated flavour and colour into a crop that turns around in a week or two. Growing them at scale needs the right substrate and the right tray fit. Hydroponics UK stocks soil-free cellulose grow mats and matched punnets in bulk packs. They suit commercial producers and dedicated home growers running daily harvests.

Consistency is what separates a profitable microgreens line from a frustrating one. A grow mat that sits flat in the tray removes guesswork from seeding. A punnet sized to hold that mat keeps watering even. Our cellulose mats absorb water quickly and release it steadily, so dense seed coverage germinates evenly. The punnets ship in break-apart strips, which speeds up potting runs on a busy propagation bench.

Choosing Between Cellulose Mats and Microgreens Punnets

The three products here solve different jobs. Cellulose mats are the substrate seeds grow on. Punnets are the containers that hold a mat and crop in standard trays. Sizing matters, so match the punnet to the mat it carries. The table below compares the bulk packs we stock for microgreens production.

How to Grow Microgreens on Cellulose Mats

Pre-soak the cellulose mat in clean water, then squeeze out the excess so it is moist but not waterlogged. Drop the mat into a tray and sow seed densely across the surface. Aim for one to two seeds per square millimetre for small seeds like broccoli or radish. Use a single dense layer for sunflower or pea. Cover with a blackout dome for the first two to three days to trigger even germination.

Water from below by standing the tray in a shallow reservoir for 20 to 30 minutes. This keeps the surface drier and reduces the mould risk that catches out new growers. Once cotyledons open, move trays under your grow lights and improve airflow. Most varieties are ready to harvest 7 to 21 days from sowing. Cut just above the mat with scissors, then compost the spent mat.

I always tell growers that airflow beats every other fix for microgreens. Damping-off and mould take hold in still, humid air long before they show on the canopy. Run a small fan once the dome comes off, water from below, and keep the mat moist rather than wet. Get those three habits right and your loss rate drops sharply across every tray.

Frequently asked questions

What are microgreens?

Microgreens are young vegetable and herb seedlings harvested at the first leaf stage. They sit between a sprout and a baby leaf. The crop is full of flavour and grows in a week or two.

Do microgreens need soil to grow?

No, microgreens grow well on soil-free cellulose mats. The natural fibre holds moisture and anchors roots. You avoid soil mess, and the mat composts cleanly after each harvest.

How long do microgreens take to harvest?

Most microgreens are ready 7 to 21 days after sowing. Fast crops like radish cut in about a week. Slower herbs such as basil and coriander take nearer three weeks.

Do microgreens regrow after cutting?

Most microgreens do not regrow after cutting. Pea shoots are the main exception and may give a second flush. For all other crops, compost the mat and start a fresh sowing.

What light do microgreens need?

Microgreens need far less light than flowering crops. A full-spectrum LED on a gentle seedling setting is plenty. Browse our grow lights for low-intensity panels suited to propagation.

What pack sizes suit commercial growers?

Our packs run from 270 cellulose mats to 3,150 punnets. Bulk quantities suit daily cut-and-come-again schedules, and multi-pack orders qualify for graduated pricing on request.

Build a full microgreens operation around the right kit. Pair these mats and punnets with low-intensity grow lights. Set trays out on sturdy grow tables, then add tiered grow racks to multiply your growing area.
